Location Development

For the narrative side to our video, I believe that we have changed the location to a place which is more accessible for us as well as the cast of the video. We said that we were going to make use of an abandoned barn, but our ideas have escalated from the time that we did the pitch, therefore things that were said by us in the pitch may not particularly be relevant now. Below displays a a park located on Howard Road, Dines Green. this will be a good place for filming our video and will play a key role throughout the narrative.

Cast Meeting

Martin has held two meetings with the cast in the last month and has agreed locations and approximate timing of filming with them which they have agreed to and have said they are free

Shot List

Shot List OVERVIEW 'The Boxer Rebellion - Evacuate'

This will not be followed 100%, this is a basis which we will follow whilst creating our music video. This is also displaying a rough estimate with regards to the shots and their numbers, this is merely because I needed some sort of structure to follow whilst creating the list and to gain some sort of idea as to how many shots will be taken, they could either go up or down which will become apparent during the filming process.

- Martin Welsby, Elle Gillies, Vikki Tyler

Shots 1-5 : Establishing shots (sky, birds, the area etc) sounds of the wind blowing, as well as sounds of birds singing

Shots 6-10 : Close-up, medium close-ups, long shots, band setting up instruments talking, speaking into the mic etc. Sounds of band members speaking, whilst lead vocalist is speaking into the mic

Shots 11-15 : cutaway back to shots of the location for the narrative part of the video, for example shots of zip wire and other things on the park

Shots 16-20 : Extreme long shot of group of teenagers running in distance, Close-up of puddle out of focus, laughter from a distance in background, music begins cued when foot steps into puddle and then focused on as they run past

Shot 21 CCTV long, high angle shot of teenagers running past whilst laughing etc, potentially some use of slow motion

Shots 22-30 : mid/long shot of band performing, lights behind creating silhouette of band, close up shots of band members playing the instruments

31-35 : mid shots of teenagers sat on a park laughing, handheld as if it was a POV shot or one of the cast are filming, the effect of footage being sped up might be present

36-46:  shots of Band performing, pull focus on lead vocalist singing and playing guitar (billy), close up on his face, as well as close up of him plucking guitar.

47- 52: shots of teenagers playing on park (i.e. zip wire, climbing frame etc)

53-56: cutaway back to band performance

57-62: long shots, hand held mid/close up shots of teenagers playing with a flat football

63-67: cutaway back to band performance, close up of vocalist

68-72: long shots, hand held mid/close up shots of teenagers using flat football to play basketball, shot is scored at end of verse, fades to black,

73-78: fades back to band performance, mid shot of all band members

79-86: long shot of teenager appearing, pulling alcohol out of his big jacket, variety of shots with them drinking

87-91: cutaway back to band performance, focus on vocalist

92-120: shots of the teenagers dancing whilst others are laughing sat on the floor. This will correlate with cutaways of band performance. Within this there will also be a range of mid/long/close up shots of the teenagers sat/lay down.

121-130: shots of band performance, close up of drummer and extreme close up on drumsticks hitting drum

131-133: establishing shots of the sky becoming darker

134-139: shots of teenagers sat round a fire, talking, laughing, handheld like a POV shot

140-155: shots of band performance, slowly fading to black as song comes to an end, this will quickly switch into a shot of the teenagers running in the direction away from the camera as it fades to black also

Old/Vintage photoshop effects

For my digipak and advert I wanted to give the images I take a old/vintage effect. This is my attempt at practising editing photos to this effect on photoshop

and this was the original

Further loaction developments

There is also a second location we think will be suitable so will also go and ask permission and carry out a risk assessment on Tuesday

Location Developments

We have found an ideal location to film our music video, a barn in Worcester

We are going to go and ask permission on Tuesday and if it is granted we will then go and carry out a risk assessment

Feedback

We Recently performed a pitch to our class speaking about the music video we will creating; talking about the ideas we have made; with regards to the audience profile, influences, potential risks and technical aspects, as well as what we want to achieve during the production of the music video. Below displays some of feedback which will help us improve the ideas for our video: ' What did you mean by your influences from Cunningham?' Most people thought that I meant Chris Cunningham was an influence in relation to abnormal his videos are, but I was influenced more by the way he filmed in his videos which I thought was strange and artistic, I wasn't going to add extremely weird things into our video. 'Performance element - could have a band set higher say on crates or hay bales so they are looking down on the riot? And how are you going to organise actors for the riot scenes?' That's a great idea and if it's possibly I will use this in our video, but in relation to the riots, i think we are scratching that idea as it will be extremely difficult to create a riotous feel to our video, so we will use the idea of a rather big group of friends causing trouble, with an anarchic style instead which in my opinion will be just as good. 'How will you achieve CCTV shots?' An idea we thought of was we can make use of a high angle shot and film, then we will have to edit the shot; put it into black and white and insert numbers/dates which will make it seem a legitimate CCTV camera. 'Do you have permission to use the barn?' Not at the moment, but we will find a suitable barn which we could use. We watched a music video which was made by a student last year at this college and we have recently emailed him asking about the location and how they got permission to use it. 'Black and white effect sounds good, what about lighting?' We will make use of natural lighting for a a lot of our filming outside, although we will make use of torch lighting, as well as lighting from a fire and also maybe use some artificial lighting. For the live performance we will use artificial lighting.

Performers and Casting

These are some of the people our group has been considering to have in our music video as we believe them to be suitable for our genre and reliable.

Time Management

I have created a timeline on time toast to give our group detailed instructions of what we need to do, when we need to do it and when it needs to be finished by.

Redundancy and Entropy

Redundancy is when a media product or text is expected and predictable, conveying a conventional message that would not shock or surprise its audience.

Entropy is when a media product or text is highly unexpected and unpredictable, giving its audience something to take an interest in as it is out of the norm.

The video I am looking at, Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down, is mostly redundant as the video is mainly illustrative and the shots are to be expected. Despite this, some scenes in the video are entropic as they have little relevance to the audio and are unpredicted to appear in the video such as the main actress wearing a tutu.

Andrew Goodwin's Analytical Framework

Music Video -

Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqkBRVukQmE

Synaesthesia

The video is illustrative with the visual responding directly to the audio

As here, the music is building and the tempo is increasing, the shots are becoming shorter, changing quicker and the camera is handheld so the shots are unsteady making it harder to        focus on what is in the shot.

The grain of voice is quite rough and sounds as if it is a live performance, this is reflected in the visuals by the handheld camera and almost 'gritty' shots making the video appear unprofessional and 'thrown together'.

The mode of address of the actors in the video are both kept within the fictional narrative of the video and directly addressing the camera and therefore the audience.

Mode of Address within fictional narrative

Mode of Address directly at camera

Narrative and Performance

The video is 100% narrative with no aspects of performance within it, because the video is a complete narrative of the audio, the visuals give the song anchorage making it difficult for the audience to connote any other meanings from it. The narrative of the video has the same function of a TV advertisement but does not have the same form and is therefore dissimilar to TV adverts. The visuals in the video are quite clear but keep some elements of ambiguity such as the main actress eventually ending up in a tutu and bright clothes to keep the audience watching the video repeatedly, trying to make the purpose of the visuals make more sense.
The video communicates the authenticity of the artist as said earlier, the grain of voice is rough and sounds live and the visuals respond and relate to this by being messy and giving it a 'home made' look.
